The Yearly Challenge
Our biggest challenge over the next few years: is calming the growing concerns of balancing our budget, and building our reserves. Increasing our revenue would be the cure all, yet the invitation to discuss how this can be accomplished has yet to given.
Just as families and businesses have had to tighten their financial spending habits so did City government. The main difference between them - it is perfectly fine for government to continue to borrow, as long as it is to invest in new roads, or other infrastructure because it will pay off when the economy starts to grow. Not that we should disregard debt as either good or bad, however the best solution for borrowing is that this debt should be gradual as our economic growth will be as well.
Our goal should not be year after year after year after year of just chasing the how do we balance our budget quagmire. Our goal should be how do we grow our locally economy; this would help to employ folks, and when that occurs it will bring in more revenue. We have had numerous meetings regarding the chasing of our tails we have yet to have one meeting about growing our economy.
Acknowledgement to
Karl Neathammer & the three City Department Managers who spoke at the recent Board of Supervisors meeting, supporting the currently policy of budget hearing. Hopefully they will continue to voice their opinion regarding other issues as they come before the Board.
Kudos
To the young man who spoke at the podium, (he serve four years in the United States Air Force) and said it was good to hear the debate about the budget process. Unfortunately , his name I do not recall.
Discussion On the Horizon
• Hiring of Deputy City Manager - this should place a hiring freeze on any consultants unless first approved by the Board.
• Hiring of the Director for Visitor Bureau - our local economy could benefit if the right person is hired.
