Fwd: Making Main Street a Complete Street
Jeff Moser, letter
Supervisor Shirk,
This email is in regard to your Twitter post, "June 20th BoS meeting it will be decided if the street is to be narrowed from 2 lanes in each direction to 1 lane with parallel parking."
Technically "the street" would not be narrowed. Car travel lanes would be reduced from 4 to 2, but the width of the street would remain the same. It's a reallocation of the public space that belongs to all of us. The idea that one person per car should be our top transportation priority is outdated and a poor design for our Main Street. There's a better idea. Let's get more people sharing rides, using public transportation, biking and walking. Drivers can use Stewart Street during the peak times of the day if they're in a hurry. By making Main Street into a complete street, we can improve pedestrian safety, reduce speeding, encourage more walking and biking, add more stops for public transit and tour buses, and improve access to our downtown businesses.
Thank you,
Jeff Moser
